Gurukkal Dr. S. Mahesh is celebrated as an Indian Martial arts Guru, often revered as a “Warrior Monk,” dedicated to the ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu . As the fifth-generation master in a 129-year-old lineage, he upholds the rich tradition of Kalaripayattu and Siddha systems. Gurukkal’s approach blends tradition with innovation, making Kalaripayattu accessible to a global audience while preserving its original essence.

Gurukkal offers a unique perspective on Kalaripayattu as a comprehensive system for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. He serves as the Co-Principal investigator of the IKS Center for Kalaripayattu and Siddhar Tradition, under the Ministry of Education, Govt of India.

Honors and Recognitions from Indian Army

In recognition of his efforts to preserve and modernize this ancient art, Dr. Mahesh has been awarded several prestigious honors. He received the Indian Army’s Medal of Excellence , the South Star Medal from Southern Commander A.K. Singh, and a ceremonial bayonet from Lt. General Anand Narayanan, acknowledging his contributions to martial arts at a distinguished ceremony in Indore , Military headquarters of war , and many acclaims from Brigadier Lalith Sharma and Brigadier Salil.

Gurukkal’s commitment to excellence transcends the training grounds, fostering an environment where students thrive both athletically and academically. His students actively participate in prestigious championships at the district, state, and national levels, showcasing their skill and dedication on grand stages. The accolades garnered, including medals at the National Games and KHELO India, not only reflect the prowess of these students but also serve as a testament to the effectiveness of Gurukkal’s training methodology.

Moreover, students enrolled in the Nithyam program reap academic rewards, with the discipline and dedication cultivated through Kalaripayattu training often translating into success in their studies. Many students have received grace marks in public exams, acknowledging their commitment to both physical and intellectual pursuits.
